One of our most recommended tourist destinations in SOCCSKSARGEN Region is the Municipality of Maitum in Sarangani Province.
The small town which name was derived from the native term maitum which means black that also pertains to legendary tales of black stones near one of its four major rivers has a lot to offer to tourists. The town is known for the discovery of unique anthropomorphic jars which are believed to be used during the Metal Ages. It is also where the famed white water tubing adventure at Pangi River and the annual Bangsi Festival can be experienced.
During Bangsi Festival, thousands of tourists and visitors flocked the town as local folks showcased their talents, love for nature and hospitality. The festivity is a tribute to the fisherfolks and celebrates the town’s prosperous fishing industry, particularly their top produce - the bangsi or flying fish.
Among the highlights of Bangsi Festival includes the float competition, and the street dancing with contingents coming from different schools wearing colorful costumes symbolizing life in the sea and performances that portrays the marine life.
The popular Maitum Photo Safari is also held during Bangsi Festival. The event has become one of the most anticipated activities of the celebration every year as photographers from all over the country converge in Maitum. I was one of the participants this year, and the experience was amazing. Participants were challenged to capture the bests of Maitum and experienced the colorful and exciting activities of Bangsi Festival.
The Sugbarangayan or the simultaneous grilling of tons of flying fish along the main streets of Maitum was also a crowd-drawer. It is where everyone feast on the abundant flying fish. The sights of locals sharing grilled bangsi to visitors and tourist is a sight to behold.
Other activities of Bangsi Festival is the coastal clean-up, fun run, zumba, sand sculpture competition, aqua dance, Miss Teen Maitum, banca race, motocross and many more.
Maitum is a 2-hour drive on a paved highway from General Santos City.
