Torogan is a traditional house of the Maranaos. Made of hard woods with post made up of whole tree-trunks and are known for intricately carved panolong (beam-ends) with okir designs, the torogan was once a symbol of high social status. It is said that these were the royal houses of a sultan or datu in the Maranaw community.
During our recent travel in Lanao del Sur, we are lucky to have dropped-by in Marantao town to visit one of the well-known torogans in the province - the Kawayan Torogan located in Brgy. Bubung Malanding. Built by Sultan sa Kawayan Makaantal, it is also considered as the last remaining habitable torogan in Lanao del Sur.
In 2008, Kawayan Torogan was declared as a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines.
