The Municipality of Glan in Sarangani Province, known for its white sand beaches and where the annual Sarbay Fest, considered the biggest beach party in the country is held, is also a town of diverse cultures, rich traditions, colorful history and abundant in natural resources.
Just recently, Glan concluded the commemoration of its Founding Anniversary and Lubi-lubi sa Glan Festival which highlighted the town's major product - the coconut or "lubi". Glan is dubbed as the "Coconut Queen of the South" and is considered as the top producer of coconut in the region. It is also the oldest town in South Central Mindanao.
Now on it's 20th edition, this year's festivities is themed "Glan @105: Moving towards progress through tourism and cultural preservation". Tourists from different parts of the country visited Glan during the week-long celebration with lots of exciting activities that has also become "bigger and grander" according to some locals and frequent visitors.
I particularly enjoyed the activities at the Tourtown Glan Bazaar including Sangka sa Kaha, the bukayo and buko pie cooking competition; the first-ever Bai de Glan, a pageant featuring the beautiful ladies of the Blaan tribe; talent and skills contests; cultural presentations; and the night with lerong/ juntra dancing. The awesome displays of local crafts, destinations, and food and agri products, from different barangays of Glan was also a crowd-drawer.
The Cocolympics was also among our favorite events in this year's Lubi-lubi sa Glan Festival. Activities including Buak, Bunot ug Lugit Lubi, Lumba Inum Tuba, and Paspasanay Kudkud Lubi easily became viral in our social media posts and are activities to look forward again next year.
The extreme motocross and off-road competitions, the cheerdancing and hip-hop contest, search for Mutya ng Glan and Miss Gay pageants, and the nightly concerts at Plaza Rizal and Baywalk Glan with invited celebrity performers and local and national bands were also a hit.
And I really had a blast watching the Lubi-lubi sa Glan Festival Street Dancing Competition. It became one of my favorites not only in the region but in the whole of Mindanao. The unique and colorful costumes of performers and gigantic props and the lively performances of each groups gave me goosebumps. It was a one-of-a-kind street dancing, "something new" to me that has been covering festivals in Mindanao.
I'm impressed by Lubi-Lubi Festival. It beautifully showcased the diverse cultures in Glan, successfully highlighted the town's major product and colorful history.
I will surely be back again in Glan next October.
