Rich History
The Municipality of Maitum is well-known for the discoveries of ancient anthropomorphic (human form) burial jars in some of its caves. Archaeologists who studied these artifacts unearthed in 1991 at Ayub Cave in Brgy. Pinol revealed that these are 2,000 years old.
The Pinol Cave Formation Area discoveries were declared in 2009 as important cultural property by the Philippine government. The artifacts are now kept at the National Museum while the replicas are also a must-see attractions exhibited in a special diorama at the Municipal Hall.

Maitum has also become popular because of its colorful and unique festivals held annually. Thousands visits the town every year to attend the Bangsi Festival every January and the Binuyugan Festival every month of May.
Being a coastal town, the Bangsi Festival is a tribute to the fisherfolk. Many of households in Maitum depend on the fishing industry as source of livelihood and the Flying Fish or Bangsi is their most valued catch.
It is during Bangsi Festival that visitors and local folks feasts over tons of flying fish grilled along the main street of Maitum.

The Binuyugan Festival is a cultural and a thanksgiving celebration in Maitum held during the town's founding anniversary in May. The rich culture, traditions and history of Maitum are highlighted during this week-long celebration.

Must-try fun activity in Maitum is the White Water Tubing at Pangi River (considered as one of the cleanest rivers in the country) in Brgy. New La Union. Spelunking adventures also awaits outdoor-lovers in Maitum - explore Yama Cave in Brgy. Tuanadatu or the easy to reach Zion Cave.

Just recently, the municipal government launched M'langen Falls as one of their tourist attractions. Go on a short trekking adventure and be rewarded with the breathtaking sight of this multi-tiered waterfalls also located in Brgy. Tuanadatu.
The Pawikan Sanctuary in Brgy. Kiambing is another place promoted as a tourist destination in Maitum. See young sea turtles, learn the importance of conserving them and have the experience of releasing them into the sea as part of the activity.

The friendliest people
The people of Maitum are peace-loving and friendly. They are the most accommodating people you will meet. They are mostly Ilocano-speaking with a lot of Bisaya, Ilonggo, Tboli and Maguindanaons.
They have delicious native food and local delicacies too!
